More on Voyeurism

Gaze - There are four different types of gaze that is portrayed in music videos:

  • The Spectator's Gaze - The audience watching the music video
  • Intra-Diagetic Gaze - Where once person, depicted in the text, is looking at another person or object in the text, such as one character looking at another.
  • Extra-diagetic Gaze - Where the person depicted in the text looks at the spectator, such as singing to the camera, an aside or some other form of breaking the fourth wall.
  • Intra-intra-diagetic Gaze - Such as the artist watching themselves on a TV screen or listening to themselves on the radio.
We have to use intra-intra-diagetic gaze in our music video, so we were thinking of the singer putting a record on a record player, which would then start playing the song. We think this will fit in with Eliza Doolittle's retro look and would work with the theme of our video.

Ideas

We have had three main ideas for our music video for the song Skinny Genes, and here are the pros and cons of each:

  1. A boy and a girl (the girl being the singer) going on a series of dates, the boy embarrassing the girl on each one but she decides in the end that she loves him anyway when he's about to leave.

  • Pros: Fits well with the song, could do a lot with it
  • Cons: A bit cheesy and overdone, would mean relying on other people, as we have no boys in our group who could play the male part.
     2. A girl on a trip out in London with a pair of skinny jeans (on their own) walking around with her as       if it was her boyfriend.

  • Pros: Using shots of London, a bit different and unusual, wouldn't have to rely on others.
  • Cons: would be difficult to do, as we would have to make it so that it looks like a pair of jeans walking around without support.
     3. A girl on a series of dates with a Ken doll, as if it is her boyfriend. Includes shots such as making 'him' an english breakfast with Haribo fried eggs, sharing a milkshake at a milkshake bar and going on a boat together. This would end with the singer being resized using green screen to make it look as if she was in a barbie car with the doll, driving off into the sunset.

  • Pros: Funny, creative, unusual, fits with Eliza Doolittle's quirky, childish theme and we have plenty of idea for different dates and situations, don't have to rely on others.
  • Cons: Could be difficult to work out how to do the end bit.

Overall, I think that the third one would be the funniest, most creative one, and we have lots of ideas of where to take it, so that is the one we will probably do.

Voyeurism

This is the definition of Voyeurism from Wikipedia:

Voyeurism (from the French voyeur, "one who looks") can take several forms, but its principal characteristic is that the voyeur does not normally relate directly with the subject of their interest, who is often unaware of being observed. The practice of making a permanent image of an intimate activity has been made easier with modern photographic and video technology, and is considered an invasion of privacy. However, in today's society the concept of voyeurism has evolved, especially in popular culture. Reality television programs such as Big Brother are prime examples of voyeurism, where viewers (the voyeur) are granted an intimate interaction with a subject group or individual. Although not necessarily "voyeurism" in its original definition, as individuals in these given situations are aware of their audience, the concept behind "reality TV" is to allow unscripted social interaction with limited outside interference or influence

Our music video must have an element of voyeurism in it, for example the lead 'singer' putting the CD of their own music on or looking through photos of the events in the video. We are yet to decide how to incorporate this element into our video.

Discarded Songs and Ideas

There were a couple of ideas that my group discussed doing before we decided on doing Skinny Genes. For example, we considered the song You Need Me Man I Don't Need You, by Ed Sheeran:

We thought that there would be lots of visual elements in the lyrics that we could use for our ideas, and we thought we could do a performance based video, but we realised that the singer is male, so of course we would need a male to lip sync and perform the song, which could be a problem because it's hard to rely on people who aren't in our group.

Another song we considered was Lights by Ellie Goulding:

However, all the ideas we had for the song were things like light shows, and other things that would be difficult to do with no budget and no good location, although we thought that the song would be a good one to get ideas from, because there are lots of things you can do with it.

In the end, however, we decided on Skinny Genes by Eliza Doolittle, and are planning to use elements for example spelling lyrics out with scrabble pieces and using graffiti backdrops in London. We're not completely sure of the total concept yet, but we'll present our proper ideas in our treatment.

Skinny Genes Lyrics

Here are the lyrics for the song 'Skinny Genes', by Eliza Doolittle:

I really don’t like your point of view
I know you’ll never change
Stingin' me with your attitude
I've got the mind to walk away

I really don't like your arrogance
Or your policies
You're ninety-nine percent an embarrassment
With just one quality

[Chorus:]
I don't mind it when you [whistles]
Brings out the best in me when you [whistles]
Show your expertise
When the night always ends with a fight
I'm excited that you wind up next to me

I like it when you [whistles]
Can I have some please of that [whistles]
Satisfy my needs
Sometimes I fake that I hate you and make up
So you wind up next to me

I really don't like your skinny jeans
So take them off for me
Show me what you've got underneath
So we can do this properly

I really don't like the way you smile
When you think you're right
But I will forgive you, the yolk is in the middle
And I'm chewing through the white

[Chorus]

dreamt that you were on a train
you were leaving, you were leaving
You made me think of what I'd miss
You were leavin', you were leavin'

I don't mind it when you [whistles]
Brings out the best in me when you [whistles]
Show your expertise
When the night always ends with a fight I'm excited
That you wind up next to me

I like it when you [whistles]
Can I have some please of that [whistles]
Take off your skinny jeans
Sometimes I fake that I hate you and make up
So you wind up next to me

I dreamt that you were on a train,
you were leaving, you were leaving.

I think that we can take a lot of ideas for our video from these lyrics, for example the mention of trains, and we could use lots of the imagery in the song. We're also thinking of using parts of the lyrics to spell out parts of the song with letters or scrabble pieces.

Eliza Doolittle

I have changed group in our class and am now in Alice and Valentina's group. This lesson Valentina was away, so me and Alice went through some ideas for our video, which will be to the song 'Skinny Genes' By Eliza Doolittle:

We were thinking of using some ideas from one of her other videos, for example this video for the song Rollerblades:

For example we like the idea of using scrabble pieces to spell out parts of lyrics, which would fit in with Eliza's quirky, fun style. As well as this we like the use of graffitti as backgrounds. We also thought we could use brightly coloured gumballs as a visual reference, because it looks really bright and playful, which also fits in with her style.
